ORAL PATHOLOGY

Oral Pathology in Lancaster, Lititz, and Hummelstown / Harrisburg, PA

The inside of the mouth is normally lined with tissue (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in color. An alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer. These altered areas of the mouth may appear as red/white patches, sores that fail to heal or bleed easily, firm/hard swellings, or may be incidentally found on an xray/CT scan obtained for other purposes.

Almost 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, many of which are diagnosed in late stages. There are multiple risk factors including, but not limited to smoking, alcohol, chronic physical trauma, and exposure to the human papilloma virus.

The surgeons at Conestoga Oral Surgery are specially trained to diagnose and, in some cases, treat these lesions and conditions based on their extensive training. We can perform a simple biopsy of an area to obtain a diagnosis from an oral pathologist. This diagnosis then dictates the next course of treatment. We have unique, well-established relationships with many head and neck oncology surgeons in Central Pennsylvania and our Hospital Care Coordinator will assist you with scheduling appointments with these individuals if necessary.

If you have recently noticed a change within the oral cavity or have been told by your physician or dentist to see an oral surgeon for further evaluation, please call us today at (717) 394-3033 to schedule an appointment.
